pass me a barf bag…

Two things that came out of Bush’s mouth a few minutes ago: “The majesty of law…” “Justice William Wehnquist…” And he just rambled on about how Roberts is “what people want in a judge,” and how he’s not going “to legislate from the bench.” But isn’t that what SCOTUS does?!?!? Oy.

john roberts: a bushco stooge

Judge John Roberts does not belong on the Supreme Court bench. A few of the many ticks against him: He’s anti-Roe, and thus anti-privacy and anti womens’ rights. He’s against the Constitutionally-mandated separation of church and state. He’s ruled that the Endangered Species Act is fundamentally unconstitutional. He’s helped with the Cheney smokescreen of efforts

“but you’re dead – i shot you!” “no you didn’t!”

Okay, this one goes down in the “how-in-the-hell-did-they-let-this-info-leak?” hall of fame: “Soldiers forced to shout ‘bang’ as the Army runs out of ammunition” (London Telegraph)

hp6: great read, good setup

I finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince late last night, and it was a worthy romp. Perhaps “romp” isn’t the best term, as it is a downer of a tale, but an important setup for the seventh and final installment of the series. In short: Harry and the gang now know what needs to

hot, hot, hot

Y’know, I’ve had it lucky: my first two summers here in D.C. were fairly nice: not too hot for too long, moderate humidity, and otherwise pleasant stuff. In 2005, it’s all changed. We have some genuinely hot spells. The humidity is high, and the AQI is getting a bit frightening for long stretches at a

2 a.m. – 128 pages down

128 pages into Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince. So far, so good. It was fun to hear the “oohs” and “ahhs” of the younger members of the crowd (as well as a few of the older ones) as the cart of brand-new copies was wheeled out at the Olsson’s Books location in Bethesda. Chapter

go, sprite, go!

A tip of the hat (bike helmet?) to sprite, who is mentioned in a new post at DCist. Kudos!

a potter death in various flavours

I’m a fan of the Harry Potter book series, and I can’t wait for midnight tonight, when the latest volume is released. One of the few details that J.K. Rowling has revealed is that a major character will die in this book (sprite has her own take on things – possible spoilers on her site

the silence is deafening

Just watching the BBC News, which had wonderful coverage of today’s silent vigil for the victims of last week’s bombings. It was truly breathtaking to see thousands of Londoners stopped in their tracks, perfectly still and silent for two minutes – a most moving scene, to say the least. It reminds me of being in

scott’s non-answers

Gotta love how BushCo is flailing right now. First, their poll numbers – especially on the public’s trust of Bush and his character – have plummeted. And his talk-dog, Scot McClellan, keeps stonewalling. And he says that such probing questions hurt. It amazes me what happens when talking heads have to go off-script – especially
