A hot-and-humid Sunday ride, done solo. I followed the PPTC Tuesday route, more or less, and it was fine. Quite a dearth of rider out on the roads, which was a bit strange. However, it was a good ride.
The Hartford Courant is running a short series (part 1, part 2) on the woes at Connecticut Public Television. Over the past 16 months, CPTV has moved to a new, larger office while slashing positions, cutting back local programming, and losing both viewership and the resulting donors. CPTV has run up large debts: past-due phone, electicity and janitorial bills that have resulted in credit woes and, thus, bad PR.
CPTV is not alone, as many PBS and NPR stations have seen increasing financial pressures, dwindling viewership and listenership, and have been wondering “why?”
The answer is simple: forsaking the local programming will cause viewers to look elsewhere.

This was a bit of a two-part ride: the first 4.3 miles were spent riding with sprite around Middleburg. We saw some deer (including a fawn) while riding behind the town cemetary. After that, I rode up the road from Middleburg on a very hilly road. My average speed for this bit was decent – around 16 mph – given that there was a really large hill on the way back – probably a sustained 6 percent grade, so not quite the same as the Bash Bish ride in New York, but good for a quick fix.
