the beauty of english english

Podcasts can be quite informative to the evolution of the English language, as well as to the divergent ways the language develops here in the U.S. and in the U.K. motherland. I say this because I’m quite a fan of the podcast of “The Geoff Show”, Virgin Radio’s evening show. The podcast is interesting, in

jury hotline update

This morning I was able to arrange my deferrment of jury duty using the DC courts’ automated deferral system over the phone. Indeed, it is fully automatic, which makes me wonder why it’s disabled over the weekend? And their website loaded without a hitch today at the office, while continuing to fail loading at home.

non-automated automation

I tried using the DC court’s “automated deferral” system to reschedule jury duty. When I read that the system was “automated,” I assumed that it meant 24-7 availabiliy, both on the web and on the phone. I tried their website, which is listed as an option on the juror form. No dice: page won’t load.

microsoft’s photocopiers are workin’ overtime

Just got a chance to watch the video of Bill Gates‘ keynote from CES, where he previewed the upcoming Windows Vista OS, due “sometime before the end of 2006.” While it looked nice, it was all-too-reminiscent of the OS I now use: Mac OS X 10.4, which has been available since April 2005. In fact,

i’m gonna send this via homing pigeon, in happy, supportive tones

Two new developments in the Big Brother nature of the U.S. government: The Department of Homeland Security is now screening letters it deems “suspicious” by opening them and reading them. thursday thoughts: fonts, web 2.0, etc.

Some happy randomness for today: It’s the season of end-of-year lists, and Typographica has chimed in with their favorite fonts of 2005. Some really cool stuff, and I even have one of ‘em (Adobe Garamond Premier Pro). There’s a lot of buzz about “web 2.0″ – so much that it’s tough to really tell whether

wal-mart bait-and-switch… yuck!

For the third year in a row, the iPod was one of the hottest gifts for the holiday season. And this year was the first year that the music player was available for sale at Wal-Mart (after a long negotiation period where Apple actually got the evil Walton empire to bend). However, not everybody who

wordpress 2.0 is out – fair warning

After a long and (hopefully) productive development cycle, WordPress has released version 2.0 of their content management system. This blog currently runs version 1.5.2 of WordPress. So I’m taking the plunge and upgrading my blog – the procedure for upgrading is involved, but shouldn’t be too bad. I’m hoping that my theme and plugins work

twice in a week!

The folks at DCist must like my photos or something, because this morning’s roundup marks the second time in the last week that a photo of mine has graced their site. You can see the first one here. Thanks a ‘mil to the kind folks at DCist – you brighten my day, and I’m right
