People generally have a hard time seeing things from other viewpoints. While there is a basis for concern over big debt and government, blindly railing at deficits and regulation is just plain silly, IMO.

Gerson recently wrote an interesting article on the Tea Party and its effects on the Republican Party.

A college friend described dorm life as incestuous, and really she was right. You will know an awful lot about an awful lot of people. Sometimes that's good; your friends don't have to explain themselves all the time. But sometimes it's bad; you didn't really want to know what that couple was doing in the shower stall. It's what makes dorm life great -- and what's supposed to make you want to leave it after four years.

Also, the importance of real mail. You have to send some to get it, but it really can turn your day around when there's a card or letter or package slip in your campus mailbox.

I loved this post! Well done.

I went on a madcap drive to Cape Cod to see the sunrise over the ocean on my 22nd birthday.

That's totally one of my favorite memories from college.

Cheh's per-ounce soda tax was shot down. What she got instead was removal of the sales-tax exemption for soda, which will no longer be treated as groceries. So soda will be subject to the normal sales tax, which is much less than 1 cent per ounce. Still a positive move, though.

I'm thinking of biking to my new job - it's right off the town bike path. I think it'd take 20-30 minutes. Not so bad - and good exercise.

and then to be honest .. London isn't even the best place in England to drink beer. you must head north! where the ale is deep and dark and they serve it to you direct from a wooden cask and that rustic ale smell permiates into your clothes and gets stuck there for a couple of hours. marvellous.

but yes. fly to England, land in London. and then head north a bit. i'll meet you at the airport.

I often wish that I liked beer - it's everywhere, there are so many interesting (sounding!) types, and since 99% of the population likes it, it's a nice bonding type thing. But I can't develop a taste for it - the first swallow is always just too gross for me to continue!

I don't know if I really have a drink - I love coffee, I love tea, I love rum, I love vodka! But I'm currently a horrible lightweight so a shot of the latters knocks me to the floor ;) Though there is a Russian restaurant sorta nearby that has like 100 flavours of vodka, and I would like to go there at some point - preferably w/ a group so I can steal sips ;)

NBC's Olympic broadcasts have been dreadful, even to this ex-figure skater who generally likes watching figure skating, but does so with the sound muted whenever the bilious Dick Buttons is on the screen. And yes, the amount time they are giving to interviews and human (and bear) interest stories instead of the actual Olympic sports is more than annoying.

Al Michaels has been a bumbling catastrophe behind the desk. At one point the other night, he just stared the teleprompter (and the viewing public) down until it faded to black because he had too quickly stuttered his way through whatever he was trying to say and had seconds of extra time. To say it was painful would be an understatement.
