a shine with your shave

Given the whole trend toward wetshaving, wouldn’t it be nice to get a great, 5-minute shoeshine?

independent buzz

Back in high school, I practically lived in an independent coffee house – Salt Lake Roasting Company. Ever since, I’ve had an affinity for independent coffee and tea houses, and try to patronize them whenever possible. From the Green Marble Coffee House and Klekolo in Connecticut, to Jamaica Coffee House in Vermont, to Soho Tea and Coffee here in the District, I try to patronize the local shops whenever possible.

Now there’s a great website that helps locate independent coffee and tea houses throughout the U.S.: Delocator.net. This will help me in my travels, for sure.

how to boil a perfect egg

Yes, this is a bit too thorough, but it should bring consistent results at sea level.

the rise of the ticket bots

Recently, there was quite a bit of uproar over internet presales for the U2 tour. People ended up losing their early-access tickets not only to insiders and scalpers, but also something that Ticketmaster has tried hard to prevent: bots.

So consider yourself very lucky if you managed to score good seats to U2.

workout log: 4 april 2005

Activity: road cycling
Location: Washington, DC
Duration: 0820-0831 hrs. and 1704-1714 hrs.
Distance: 4.2 mi.
Weather: party cloudy, 46 degrees (morning); sunny, 65 degrees (afternoon)
Max HR (bursts): 180 (beats in 10 seconds x 6)
Type: anaerobic

First bicycle commute since last fall. Lotsa rust, and started the morning ride way too quickly, resulting in a good lung burn. But kept up the effort. Afternoon was much better, with a smoother start and a good, building effort until I arrived home.

first game at rfk

The first game was a blast – a cold blast. The Mets beat the Nats, 4-3. Our seats (in section 427) were quite good. We could see most of the action, save for the deepest part of left field. The weather managed to remain dry, but bitterly cold and windy. I defnintely underdressed for the occasion, and will remember to bring a blanket and/or more warm layers for home opening day on April 14. And I need to write to Aramark, the concessions vendor at RFK, and request that they have a bigger selection of hot beverages – only coffee was available, and it sold out quickly. My kingdon for cocoa!

I managed to find one of the elusive DC-logo Nats caps (type 1 and type 2) for sale in the stadium concourse. It’s not the official batting practice hat (which is nylon), but a “casual fade” version of the same (navy cap with red bill). It’s great – after all, it’s tough to swallow wearing a “W” on one’s head when you don’t support the current president. Sure, I can claim “it also stands for Wesleyan University,” and I did take a handful of grad courses there, but still…. DC will do for now.

I’ll post pictures tomorrow, once I get fresh batteries into the digicam. But this much is true: it’s great to see baseball back in DC, at RFK.

’tis the season for the ____balls

Since it’s baseball (and soon in DC, softball) season, it seems like the perfect time to post these gems by Terry Cashman. Enjoy!
