with barry getting kid gloves, dc still won’t get respect

This morning, DC Councilman Marion Barry was sentenced to three years’ probation for failing to file income tax. He is to serve no jail time and does not face any fines for his actions (or lack thereof). Barry was given a deal that nobody of normal stature would get under similar circumstances. Face the basic

waiting for the jury (duty), baseball, and bermuda highs

Some quick notes: I spent most of today at the DC Courthouse, doing my civic duty as a potential juror. Unlike sprite, I wasn’t selected during the course of the day. I did get some reading done, but not much else. While waiting for my possible selection to a jury, the waiting room TVs showed

what’s not being said by chertoff

Allow me to complete this statement from today’s testimony from Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff: “We were acutely aware of Katrina…” “…but we didn’t do anything because we were too busy gazing at our navels to care about people who earn less than $200,000 per year.” The finger pointing that’s going on with BushCo is

it’s about time to draw up articles of impeachment

Well, the cat’s out of the bag: Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, testified to a federal grand jury that he had been “authorized” by Cheney and other White House “superiors” in the summer of 2003 to disclose classified information to journalists to defend the Bush administration’s use of

He is, of course, leaving out a lot of details: the fact that other Presidents who’ve used FISA have obtained the necessary warrants, the fact

whew – the half-smoke is safe!

I just read that Ben’s Chili Bowl, one of my favorite DC eateries (and one of the most historic) will be able to stay in business, thanks to an appeal to the city’s assessor. The problem was that Ben’s property assessment nearly doubled, which would’ve forced some tough decisions. The appeal brought the assessment back

jury hotline update

This morning I was able to arrange my deferrment of jury duty using the DC courts’ automated deferral system over the phone. Indeed, it is fully automatic, which makes me wonder why it’s disabled over the weekend? And their website loaded without a hitch today at the office, while continuing to fail loading at home.

non-automated automation

I tried using the DC court’s “automated deferral” system to reschedule jury duty. When I read that the system was “automated,” I assumed that it meant 24-7 availabiliy, both on the web and on the phone. I tried their website, which is listed as an option on the juror form. No dice: page won’t load.
